LICSF Alum assists with Met Amateur coverage

MANHASSET, N.Y. (August 27, 2026) – Current Long Island Caddie Scholarship recipient Derek Young had the chance to lend the Metropolitan Golf Association a hand at the 124th Met Amateur Championship at Deepdale Golf Club.

Young, a 2025 scholar, assisted with scoring on the course to help ensure all numbers were final and accurate, which was especially helpful with a full field ahead of the cut day. Despite being behind the ropes, he found his past experience as a caddie coming in handy.

“Obviously as a caddie, you got to be mindful of your surroundings,” Young said. “Be mindful not to step in a guy’s backswing and all that. It translates to here because we’re always moving.”

Young added: “Learning how to talk to people, how to socialize and learn from one another. As a caddie, I’m on the front door of the events helping the players and then as an intern, I’m working the backdoor: working the field, helping set up, scoring. It’s kind of a little bit of both worlds.”

Young’s time working the Met Am was just one part of what has been a productive summer internship with the MGA ahead of his freshman year at St. John’s University.

The 18-year-old has bounced around the Met Area, assisting with digital and social media coverage of tournaments as well as with scoring at a number of events including the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills in June.
